This week’s been a bit crazy, particularly today. In between neglected day job tasks, laundry and preparing for a family event this weekend, I wasn’t sure I’d have time to do anything with my map today. Earlier in the week I was a bit lazy, so I haven’t gotten as far as I would’ve liked, but tonight I got some nice progress. I had a very cozy mapping session, too. My boyfriend was working on his miniature painting (as the background of the pic below shows) and we listened to the tail end of the audiobook version of Andy Weir’s The Martian (very enjoyable, btw, you should check it out!).
I know it’s hard to see any difference from the last map I posted in a picture like this, and admittedly there isn’t as much difference as I would’ve liked since my focus has been really up and down lately. Still, I wanted to show you guys some details I am particularly fond of.
I’ve been looking at maps of the real world a lot while working on the Erziyye map, and drawing inspiration from different features of it. The lake pictured above, located on my south-west continent, was inspired by the mediterranean. It’s roughly the same disstance from the equator, too.
I like this island off of the coast of a northern continent because it looks a bit like a dragon! The problem is that it’s quite close to the pole so because of map projections, it is actually much more squished up than it looks here. I enlongated it quite substantially the other day, but I have a feeling I’ll have to make it even longer and thinner if I want it to look like a dragon on a globe, too. My next scanning session will tell me if I’m right or not.
That’s all for tonight, guys!It’s slow going but I’m pretty happy with two of my continents now, while one needs a bit of work and another a lot of work. Then I just have to add some island groups and small details, and then it’s time to digitize it. Exciting!
I think mapmaking is going to be one of my summer projects. It looks thoroughly enjoyable and a great way to get stuck into your own story’s world 🙂
