Flash Fiction Friday – Games

It’s been a while since I did Flash Fiction Friday! Feels good to be back to it. No Dixit card tonight, instead I bring you a random scene. It was inspired by a dream I had the other night, just a short scene that gave me an idea for a detail to add to a culture in my worldbuilding. Here, instead of focusing on the worldbuilding aspect, I tried to make something that felt like the start of a story even though I (currently) have no story planned for this. So in one way I guess it’s not really flash fiction since it doesn’t really have a clear narrative or a proper end but oh well… here it is anyway:

Suddenly, the girl became aware that the singing had stopped and the room had gone entirely quiet. All the other girls were looking at her, some with amusement and others with bemusement, and her cousin Mina with concern.

“You’re not even trying,” Lucy said, crossing her arms over her chest and looking at her accusingly. “Why play if you’re not even going to try?”

She tugged at her bottom lip, then nodded. “You’re right,” she said. She’d always hated Lucy but what was the point in arguing. She was too distracted to play. “I have to go anyway.” She stood, smoothing out her skirt with her palms. “I have some chores at home.” She smiled briefly, at Mina and a few of the others. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

As she left the maiden’s hut, she heard the singing start up again, Lucy’s clear voice beginning the game. But she didn’t have time for games. There were more important things on her mind.

Now if I can just stop coughing, I’m going to get some sleep.
