Flash Fiction Funday – Foster-mother of Dragons

Normally when I’m late with my flash fiction, I end up posting it on the Saturday. This week though, instead of a Fraturday, we’re having a Funday! This piece is inspired by playing this solo rpg. It’s a sort of prologue to my game, written just before I started. Hope you enjoy!

Foster-mother of Dragons

No sooner had Gertrude decided that she would go at least three months without fostering any more animals than the phone rang in the middle of the night. She sighed. Late night calls were never good news. Tucking the receiver between her ear and shoulder, she sipped her tea as the rather excitable young ladies on the other end told her what was happening.

“Don’t worry,” Gertrude said when she got a chance to get a word in. “It’s nothing I haven’t dealt with before. Do you have a location?”

As they described the little road on whose side they’d made their find, Gertrude jotted some notes down on her pad. “Yes, I know where that is. I’ll be there in twenty minutes or so.” She paused, listening. “If you are able to stay until I get there, that really is preferable. No, no, it’s better you not touch them. Great, I’ll see you soon.”

She hung up, took a last big sip of tea and got up. It didn’t take long to change out of her night gown and back into her work wear, and locate the padded basket and gloves. She really neither felt like going out, nor like fostering, but what was she supposed to do? You didn’t find dragon’s eggs at the side of the road every day.

Picking up her gear, she checked the wards around her house and got in the car. It was going to be a long month.
